Pew pew pew laser cutter

Discussions on anything related to the evolving idea of Saskatoon's first "makerspace". What is a makerspace to you? What should it be called? What's the charter?

Who wants to pitch in for this very affordable laser cutter?

Yes that looks like something I would love to spend money on. But isn't the idea of this group to pool everyone's money and have it available to all?

I think that looks really good. I think personally I'm looking to divert some of my budget to help rsilk in building a larger CNC mill, but, Maybe we could look at doing some fundraising to make a laser cutter one of our first group purchases after we get the space setup with furniture etc (work benches etc).

If you buy it, they will come. And ask to borrow it. I would pay for time on that thing. Perhaps you could rent it out?

Hypothetically, If Techworks got one of these would you guys be willing to do work for non members? I'd be willing to pay reasonable rates to have some small things done.

IMO that would be a good way to generate money for the group and pay for maintenance of the machines.
On the other hand, becoming a member gets you access to ALL the machines...

Man, this one is awfully tempting to get. I've read that the quality control is pretty sketchy but with some TLC it can be a pretty good machine.

Nope, but I found this:

Now I'm a little more scared.

Buahaha! If someone offered me a thousand dollars I wouldn't go through what that guy did!
In conclusion: no Chinese lasers.
