I once planned to build a persistence-of-vision display like this. I should still have a sizable bag of RGB LEDs that I bought for it. The plan was to mount it on the front of a kick drum and have animated, color images displayed during a band performance. The hardest part is getting enough signal lines out to all of the LEDs while maintaining a sufficient switching speed. I might resurrect that project some day.
