Introduce Yourself

Discussions on anything related to the evolving idea of Saskatoon's first "makerspace". What is a makerspace to you? What should it be called? What's the charter?

Ahoy! Good to have you. Like rsilk said, we have a meeting coming up, so I'm sure you'll meet some friends etc...

To be honest, I think we should all go for drinks after the meeting, assuming it can be had early enough? That way everyone can get to know each other a little better perhaps.

Hi, all! My name is Nathan Wiebe. I'm a UofS EP/Comp.Sci. grad from 2004. I work at a wind energy manuacturer in Saskatoon designing electrical hardware/firmware/software for power inverters, as well as other contract designs.

I love working on hobby designs, as well as commercially-orientated designs, but I find myself equally fascinated with teaching and sharing ideas with others. I am very excited about the prospect of working on group designs that combine our various skills. I know a number of members on the list either directly or by reputation, and I think we will have no problem putting Saskatoon's own Makerspace on the map!

My interests center around:
-power and control system hardware, PCB layout
-real-time operating system and device driver design, mostly at the 8/16/32 bit MCU/DSP level
-software, often the stuff that interacts with hardware, but also GUI, database, encryption and networking

My weaknesses:
-documenting a project before moving on to the next one
-anything mechanical

I'm looking forward to meeting more of you in person next Tuesday. (Or am I mistaken to assume it's an open meeting?)

Hey everyone. I don't actually live in Saskatoon at the moment, but am moving up there this September. I've been planning the move since last year, and at that time I looked for a hackerspace up there. I couldn't find one and had actually been planning on getting one started, I'm really happy to see that you guys beat me to the punch! I'm extremely excited about TechWorks, and I can't wait to get up there.

I'm a technical writer by trade, and I'm a nerd at heart. I love tinkering with stuff, I'm extremely interested in wearable computing, augmented reality, robotics, online broadcasting, and 3d printing (Rapid prototyping). I was one of the first thousand people to own a Makerbot Cupcake, and I think I'll keep it at the space (at least until we can get a reprap printed and built).

I look forward to meeting you all.

Hi All,

My name is Kevin Smith and I am a project manager for an IT consulting firm. I live in Regina but I wanted to support your project so I became a member anyway. You won't see much of me but I am sure you can find a use for my membership dues (yes, I know that they go up to $50 shortly and that's fine). I don't get up to Saskatoon very often but I will drop in when I can. Eventually you will probably have some equipment (lasercutter) that will motivate me to make the trip just to use it.

I have been building a Reprap Mendel for the last year (should have taken a month) and I have collected most of the parts for a small CNC mill. I blog about my project related misfortunes at: http://kevins3dprinter.blogspot.com/

I am not much of a builder or technician but I find that I can manage anything if I just keep stumbling forward. :D

Cheers

Hey Kevin,
Just wanted to say I really enjoyed your films, and cant wait for clerks 4. On another note, we're really honored to have a member so dedicated to our cause that they are willing to pay a membership fee even while not using the space, thanks very much! We'll work hard to get the equipment you need to find the space useful to you
