Geeky Photo Gallery

Discussions on anything related to the evolving idea of Saskatoon's first "makerspace". What is a makerspace to you? What should it be called? What's the charter?

Figured we could use a Nerd-porn thread. feel free to post up pictures of geeky stuff you have built or collected, pretty much anything goes, just keep it work safe :)

Some geeky stuff around my house:

I do a lot of test labs at home, and have built up a decent sized Cisco lab:

Also have a fair number of spare servers and storage gear:

Recently been getting into home theater, and I'm part way through building a dedicated home theater in my basement, everyhting needs to be rack mounted, haha:

I once bought enough surplus server gear to fill an 8'x12' garden shed, my wife was not impressed:

I'm hoping "well". I've got all my in wall wiring done, just ned to install pot lights, then I'm ready to prime and paint the room. Still need to buy a projector and screen (as well as a false wall to hide speakers behind acoustically trasnparent screen), build a riser for my second row of seats, and then start building my wet bar :D Adding a seocnd bathroom in my basement at the same time, which is kind of a slow process, I fear having to do the in floor heating and tile work :S

I'm thinking of selling my projector if you are looking. http://www.consignia.ca/products/Optoma ... ector.html
I'm considering upgrading. It doesn't get any better as far as resolution, but I found a higher contrast ratio and a good warranty for only a few hundred more!

Proud owner of an AE4000 here :D Couldnt' be happier with it! If its in a basement with pot lights, you'll be absolutely GOLDEN.

I have mine upstairs (I have a basement suite downstairs) and so while it looks incredible at night, it does suffer during the daytime due to the fact that its not the brightest projector in the world. If you want a demo send me a message some time. I built my own projector screen as well, if you're interested in building your own that is. I'll post some pics when I get home of it all.

Nice! very interested in having a look at some point. No place local had had them on display, but they are available through visions. I've seen an AE3000 in a dedicated home theater of a former coworker, and it was great, I don't think much changed in the AE4000.

What type of screen did you build? I was thinking of doing a 100"-110" with some type of acoustically transparent cloth, and I"m on the fence about maybe doing some type of automated masking. Would be cool to have a microcontroller accept IR from my Harmony 900 ir blaster and change screen size automagically.

The screen is about 163 inches diagonally I believe, about 150 wide, 66 inches tall? Those are fairly rough estimates, but it is a true 2.21:1 screen. The white portion is photographers paper for backdrops and such. The only reason I didn't do a taller screen (aside from the room not being wide enough) was that the rolls only came at about 72 inches tall. The wood is cedar I think, as it needs to be a hard wood that won't flex. The wood was substantial more expensive than I expected. I used black velvet to wrap around the wooden frame and stapled it on the back. Again, a lot more expensive than I was led to believe :D I think all in all it cost me around $175 to make? I should still have paper left over if anyone wants to toss me a few bucks for it. I also have the harmony 900.

My furniture is horrendous as I spent most of my cash upon buying the place on the projector and new sound system :D haha. Whether you want to be 2.21:1 is up to you, but the AE4000 makes it exceedingly easy to do. The only problem is that a lot of movies don't come in that format anymore, and you won't be playing games in that format either. Sometimes I wish I had a screen that was taller and not as wide so that it would be perfect for games, but 2.21:1 is an amazing experience for the cinematic side of things.

Is your former co-worker possibly named Mike? Haha, he's the only one I know who has an AE3000.

I bought mine from the US for $2000, and only paid $40 shipping. However, panasonic prohibits this, and most companies won't do this. You have to email them directly and beg quite a bit. The price at visions was pretty insane awhile ago ($3000) but it also came with an extra bulb, which is close to $400 in value. I've seen it sell for $2700 before, which is more reasonable (but then you have to add in GST and PST, so I'd go buy it in Alberta if I were you).
