I can remember as a kid playing video games until my brain had started to process more and more rapidly in favour of success in the game. When I finally took a break after something like three hours straight, I'd sometimes misidentify real life objects as something I needed to react to by the game's rules. Tetris is a classic example, I think. Yoshi's Cookie and Dr Mario did that to me, too.

At work, I've been tinkering with SQL a lot, and it's started me thinking of lots of things in terms of database tables. Before that, it was "how can I solve this with a script of some kind?" I'm amazed at how just being fascinated by something can influence my comprehension and interpretation of other things in my life.

The closest thing to this that I've ever experienced is driving home after a night of playing DDR, I would start to see DDR arrows in the darkness

Everything affects the way I think, I'm staring to recognize my own biases. I used to work on construction sites, and now I see every building from a project management perspective: gantt charts, planning. materials, foresight, provision, etc. "They must have ordered the steel top floor while they were pouring the concrete... gee, it's smart of them to move all the heavy equipment inside the building before winter so they can the finish the facade and do the interior work on the first phase"

Then I started applying the construction process to songwriting and, hah, its pretty similar.

I think video games contribute to developing one's "Spatial awareness" skills. Your brain starts to interpret things in a higher level of abstraction( ie: you will start to develop algorithms on how to solve problems faster).
Tetris is a very good example of this, your brain forms an abstraction of how to come up with the best possible solution given the shape falling and the pattern of shapes that are present on the playing field.
