Settlers of Cyberspace

Post by Kaldonis »

A bunch of us were brainstorming in IRC this morning and came up with the idea of a game like Settlers of Catan but with a computery theme. Plan is to use the CNC to make this.

Some of our ideas:

Name
Hackers of Catan
Settlers of Cyberspace

Resources (need 5 + desert)
CPU
RAM
IOPS
Bandwidth
Disk Space
Desert - 4chan, /dev/null, reddit...

Settlements, Cities, Roads
Laptops, Computers, CAT5
Computers, Mainframes, Tubes

Robber
Virus
DDoS

Cards
sudo - make people do stuff like give you resources (perhaps equivalent of Monopoly card)
sysadmin - equivalent of Knight card

Post your ideas below...

I love the idea but am a little bit confused thematically. Also I think terrain was overlooked. If CPUs are the resource what is the terrain? A foundry? And how to represent that?

When I first heard Settlers of Cyberspace I was thinking players as an awakening AI's competing for cyberspace. Anyone ever play 'Singularity'? Singularity is a open source game where you are the AI trying to grow and manipulate the world without getting caught. Along these lines I am thinking more along the lines of:

Terrain - Resource
Clusters/CPUs - Cycles
Software Company - Code
Social Networks - Data
Switches - Bandwidth
... (needs one more)
Luddites (Desert)

Constructions (Settlements, Cities, Roads)
Computer, Cluster, Encrypted Tunnel

Robber
CIA/Researcher investigating

You're right we overlooked terrain (we were just assuming terrain == resources for some reason), and I'm not sure how a computer's resources (cpu, ram, etc) really fit into terrains. Maybe every terrain is a computer store that only sells one part? :P

I like your terrain/resource pairings and I think the last resource could maybe be "storage" and the terrain could be what other than... a CLOUD!

Another thing to consider is resource combinations for the constructions... If we're following Catan closely (which Ryan suggested we may not want to do, arguing we could probably make improvements), the combinations might look like this:

"Tunnels" (I still think they should be tubes :P) - bandwidth and data.
"Computers" - bandwidth, data, cycles and storage
"Clusters" - 2x storage, 3x code
"Development Cards" (we need a cool name for these, "Isomorphic Algorithms"?) - 1x storage, 1x code, 1x cycle

What about something like "Hacker Cred" for victory points?

Also need to figure out ports... gateways maybe?
