Marketing ideas

Discussions on anything related to the evolving idea of Saskatoon's first "makerspace". What is a makerspace to you? What should it be called? What's the charter?

Marketing ideas

Throw them up here!
My thoughts so far:
- Pimp the open house hard
- Contact the paper and/or local news and see if they'll run something on us
- Get our 30 second explanation figured out!

Check out http://pumpingstationone.org. Their site (and wiki!) is most excellent, and would be a great model to emulate.

The Sunday Sun always has a section "Setting Up Shop" (I think that's what it's called).
I'm sure we could get them to run a piece on us. We are much more interesting than some of the stuff they print. But we should make sure to have a good representation of different areas. Anyone got any aesthetics-type projects on the go? (Edit: Paul your camera rig might fit the bill here)

Are there any other girls interested besides Lisa yet? She'll have to be our token female media go-to until we get more. We want to make sure it doesn't look like (or become) a boys-only club.

I think that come September, posters up at the University (I'm thinking specifically the engineering lounge and comp sci lounge) would be a good idea.

As far as the "boys club" thing goes, I think my wife might be interested in doing some stuff, she enjoys sewing/crafts etc. she makes her own paper, and sews shoes to sell online for children, and some other artsy stuff. She also has a CNC paper cutter, so +1 geek factor!

I think Lisa would really appreciate more female members too. She's all over that stuff

Invite someone form the Sun, Verb, Planet S and Sheaf to the open house. Or bring them in for a warm up open house so they can have writeups printed 1 to 2 weeks before our second open house.

The PS:One website is cool, Ryan is right about it being really well done. Their layout of information is really nice, I think I will use it as a template for the pages/information we should have. We need to get our square logo worked out so we can add ourselves to the hackerspace map properly, http://apps.pumpingstationone.org/hacker-space-map/. I might take a crack at a square logo but graphics is not my strong suite.

We do need to deal with the sausage party aspect of the group. Writting "boobies" on the wall and going around saying TOTBTY emphasieses the boys club and I expect will discourage some women. Can we at least tone that down? Targeting advertisment to engineers and compsci students isn't going to help the matter, though they are probably our easiest targets for membership. Maybe Lisa and Nichole should be our "focus group" if not lead the membership drive. Could also use more input from Sean and Paul (ie non-engineers, non-compsci) to keep us thinking in new and interesting ways. Would be cool to find a technical writer/journalist that is interested to help us document, advertise, make instructional videos.

CNC paper cutter sounds cool. I want to see it live and in action! I doubt a CNC paper cutter would have crossed my mind, but now taht it has been brought to my attension I can easily come up with a half dozen interesting uses for one.

She also does cakes, and the CNC cutter cuts fondant out for cake decorating, it's pretty badass, as far as crafty stuff goes.

example of stuff cut out for a cake:

Awesome! Now you realize we will need a TechWorks cake for the grand opening...
